The project

The project, consists of international collaborative research and an international conference, is poised to have significant impact in contributing towards promoting innovative approaches for building resilient, socially inclusive and progressive cities for the 21st century through harnessing the resources of creativity and innovation, and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals as was delineated in the 2020 WUF10 – Cities, Culture and Innovation.

The work programme and methodological framework include some modules of the UN-Habitat MetroHUB Toolkit:

  • The Metropolitan Observatories; The Metropolitan Management and Planning Methodologies; and the Governance Assessment Framework for Metropolitan, Territorial and Regional Management (GAF-MTR).
  • Interviews from 10-20 focus groups in each conurbation… based on governance differences and socio-economic characteristics and physical form… chief architects/planners, mayors and other city institutions
Year 1 - 2021 – Expanding the Lexicon

Month 0-3: State of the art

Establishing an advisory board consisting of senior project leaders & invited guest experts. Developing validation and detailed methodology. Materials and data contributed by a team, consists of 10-20 representatives of partner institutions, synthesized and edited by the coordinating team.

Month 3-6: Global sample – Comparing and sharing database.

Month 6-12: Developing taxonomy of the HERITOPOLIS – adding to the lexicon of MetroHUB Metropolitan Observatories

International Expert Workshop & presenting the results of 1st year in Seoul

Year 2 and 3 – 2022-2023 – Making of the Policy Document and Strengthening the Universities Network

Policy Paper on Metropolitan Heritage HERITOPOLIS: safeguarding, planning and design of the metropolis heritage to contribute towards sustainable futures by

  • Mapping, assessment and methodology tools for identifying metropolitan heritage
  • Providing a regional platform for sharing information and implementation of a design tool
  • Maintaining the vibrance and life of the metropolis and the interaction with economic viability and sustainability and guidance as to how these can be supported
  • Identifying new cultural demands with social migrations and transformations
  • Harnessing the mega data generated by the city and the citizens for decision-making
